What Makes This Practice Different?
These worksheets focus specifically on 4-digit vs 4-digit comparisons. Every number used in a comparison is between 1,000 and 9,999.
Because both numbers always contain four digits, students can concentrate on place-value reasoning instead of using number length as a shortcut.
If you need mixed practice with different number lengths anywhere within 0–9,999, use our Comparing Numbers from 0 to 9,999 Worksheets instead.

What’s Included?
This printable resource is designed specifically for comparing 4-digit numbers. Every problem presents two whole numbers from 1,000 to 9,999, and students write the correct <, > or = symbol between them.
The set includes printable worksheets, matching answer keys, and both A4 and US Letter versions for classroom, homeschool, tutoring, or home use.
How to Compare 4-Digit Numbers
When comparing two four-digit numbers, students begin with the thousands place.
For example, when comparing 4,237 and 6,104, students compare the thousands digits first. Since 4 thousands are less than 6 thousands, they know that 4,237 is less than 6,104.
If the thousands digits match, students move through the hundreds, tens, and ones places until they find the first difference.
Thousands First, Then Move Right
Students compare the greatest place value first and move one place to the right only when the digits are equal.
This left-to-right strategy strengthens place-value understanding and scales naturally to five-digit and six-digit numbers.
Skills Practiced
Students practice comparing four-digit numbers, using thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones to determine number value, identifying greater than and less than relationships, recognizing equal values, and recording comparisons with the symbols <, > and =.
Grade & Curriculum Alignment
These worksheets are especially suitable for Grade 4 students who are generalizing place-value understanding to multi-digit whole numbers.
They align closely with Common Core State Standard 4.NBT.A.2, which includes comparing two multi-digit whole numbers based on the meanings of the digits in each place and recording the comparison using the symbols >, = and <.
The worksheets can also be used for review, intervention, homeschool practice, or additional support whenever students need focused practice comparing four-digit numbers.
Who Are These Worksheets For?
Teachers, parents, tutors, and homeschool families can use these printable worksheets with students who are ready to compare four-digit whole numbers using place value.
They are useful for independent practice, small-group instruction, math centers, homework, intervention, review, or additional place-value practice.
How to Use the Worksheets
Choose either the US Letter or A4 version and print the pages you need. Students compare the two 4-digit numbers in each problem and write the correct <, > or = symbol.
Encourage students to explain which value or place value helped them make the comparison. Matching answer keys make the worksheets suitable for teacher checking or student self-correction.
