What Makes This Practice Different?

These worksheets focus specifically on 3-digit vs 3-digit comparisons. Every number used in a comparison is between 100 and 999, so students remain within the same number length throughout the practice.

This makes the resource especially useful for place-value reasoning. Students compare hundreds first, then tens, and finally ones when necessary.

If you need mixed practice with different number lengths anywhere within 0–999, use our Comparing Numbers from 0 to 999 Worksheets instead.

What’s Included?

This printable resource is designed specifically for comparing 3-digit numbers. Every problem presents two whole numbers from 100 to 999, and students write the correct <, > or = symbol between them.

The set includes printable worksheets, matching answer keys, and both A4 and US Letter versions for classroom, homeschool, tutoring, or home use.

How to Compare 3-Digit Numbers

When comparing two three-digit numbers, students begin with the hundreds place because it has the greatest place value.

For example, when comparing 347 and 582, students compare the hundreds digits first. Since 3 hundreds are less than 5 hundreds, they know that 347 is less than 582.

If the hundreds digits are the same, students move to the tens place and then to the ones place if needed.

Hundreds First, Then Tens and Ones

The key strategy is to compare digits from left to right, beginning with the greatest place value.

This helps students explain why one three-digit number is greater than another and prepares them for comparing four-digit and larger whole numbers.

Skills Practiced

Students practice comparing three-digit numbers, using hundreds, tens, and ones to determine number value, identifying greater than and less than relationships, recognizing equal values, and recording comparisons with the symbols <, > and =.

Grade & Curriculum Alignment

These worksheets are especially suitable for Grade 2 students who are learning to compare three-digit whole numbers using place value.

They align closely with Common Core State Standard 2.NBT.A.4, which focuses on comparing two three-digit numbers based on the meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits and recording the comparison with the symbols >, = and <.

The worksheets can also be used for review, intervention, homeschool practice, or additional place-value support whenever students need focused practice comparing three-digit numbers.

Who Are These Worksheets For?

Teachers, parents, tutors, and homeschool families can use these printable worksheets with students who understand three-digit numbers and are ready to compare them using place value.

They are useful for independent practice, small-group instruction, math centers, homework, intervention, review, or additional place-value practice.

How to Use the Worksheets

Choose either the US Letter or A4 version and print the pages you need. Students compare the two 3-digit numbers in each problem and write the correct <, > or = symbol.
